I'm trying to gather some info on the lightning ridge black opals with red flash, and i'm talking about the old stuff from the 80s. Has anyone known if they are still being mined or not? From what i can remember being a child to a lapidarist they were pretty rare and pricey even back then but i can't seem to find a lot of information about those now. I really liked those as a child and i want to find them if i'm able to.

What happened to those deep red-flash Lightning Ridge black opals from the '80s? are they still mined, or are we just chasing old stock and collector pieces now?

They're incredibly rare now most of that red-flash Lightning Ridge black opal hasn't been mined in decades. You'll likely need to find vintage collections or estate sales to score one

Red-flash LR material still pops up, but I think no one's pulling it out in serious quantities anymore. If you want the 80s vibe you could keep an eye on estate lots.
