I'm looking at the prices for some of the tools for this hobby and they seem steep or maybe I'm aiming high and thinking I'll need all of them. Anyway, anyone managed to DIY their tools, like a flat top? Is it doable or I shouldn't try to cheap out?

Many hobbyists build their own flat laps with a motor, splash guard, and a simple disc setup. it's a great way to save while getting started. Just make sure you're using materials that can handle the grit and water. Plenty of tutorials out there too! What kind of stones are you working with?

You can definitely DIY if you're handy like a simple flat top or basic jig setups. Just keep in mind that for precision work, a lot of the proper tools save a ton of headaches, so it's a trade off between cost and accuracy.
